Marilyn's Nice Mice
Marilyn's Nice Mice
Yes, I raise mice.
I have been raising feeder mice for years for individuals and pet
stores. I used to buy lab mouse diet which supposedly has 50
years of research behind it and claims to be the best possible
rodent diet. I wasn't totally happy with it although it was very
convenient. It was the most expensive feed I've ever bought for any of
my animals but the mice weren't totally healthy on it. They had small
to normal size litters, would sometimes eat their young, and the most
disappointing thing of all is that sometimes they would develop tumors.
There had to be a better way.
Two years ago, I started experimenting with what I had been
supplementing my chickens for years, kefir soaked oats. Only this time
I added a few other ingredients like kelp and flax seeds, and dried it
for preservation and convenience. I immediately got larger litters and
no more canabalism. The most delightful side benefit was I virtually
never get tumors any more. So for the past two years I have been making
all my mouse feed from scratch. As usual, I give my cow, Star, most of
the credit as her raw milk is the foundation for this wonderful mouse
food.
I have all sizes of mice available. Pinkys, fuzzies, hoppers, weaners, and adults. Call for prices. No shipping.

Corn Causes Tumors in Mice
After one year of great success with my own special blend of
ingredients, I have tumors in my mice. The only difference in the feed
is that I started substituting one cup of corn for the oats or barley. I saw
my first tumor in a long time last month. Not realizing the cause, I
upped the corn to 1/2 the grain in the last two weeks. Yesterday when I
cleaned all the cages, I noticed at least 10 mice with tumors.
The reason for upping the corn was because I am feeding the same
formuula to my chickens. Too many oats is not good for chickens. Corn is
good, especially this time of the year. I'm writing this November 27, 2005. Corn keeps the birds warmer, it
causes no digestive issues as does oats and barley, it makes the yolks
dark, and they love it. I am back to the original proven formula for my mice.
I talked to my vet and she said corn carries fungus that could cause
mammary tumors in my mice. So maybe it was the fungus on the corn
causing the tumors and not the corn itself. This makes corn just as
bad. I wonder what it does to people.
